Yonder Mountain String Band - 06/11, 12, & 13 - Big Top, Minnesota Zoo, People's Court

I love living in the midwest.  Besides the heat, of course, but that's a whole different story.  This past weekend was our much anticipated 3 night midwest Yonder run.  The first night was in Bayfield, WI at the Big Top Chautauqua.  This is one of those legendary venues that people can't stop talking about, and it was our first year there.  The forecast for the entire weekend in the midwest was rain, and it was in the 50s and rainy on Lake Superior that day.
We were so excited for these shows, but we got the bad news that Anitra and Josh missed their (overbooked) flight through Delta (Don't Ever Leave The Airport), and they wouldn't make it in time for the Big Top show.  That was a total bummer.  Especially because Anitra had recommended that we stay at the Winfield Inn, and they never got to see it.  This hotel was quaint and beautiful, with actual keys instead of keycards.  As I was talking about the coolness of the keys, a man in the lobby asked if we were from a big city.  We soon discovered that not only was he also from Des Moines, he went to the same high school as me and Colin.  Too funny.
Oh, did I mention the inn was right on Lake Superior.  It was beautiful and the air was so crisp and cool.  Perfect.

We went to Ethel's at 250 for dinner, where we split a delicious burger and got a pizza for after the show.  The waitress was also an opera singer and sang for everyone while we ate.  It was incredible!
We got to the Big Top pretty early, but some of our friends were already there.

During the soundcheck, Bill, Colin, and I heard them play In the Woods with the Munchies and it got us really excited.  They don't play that... they just don't.

When we got inside the tent we saw that they had not removed the first few rows of seating as they were rumored to be doing.  That was a disappointment.  Our actual seats were behind the soundboard (awesome), but for the first set we stood to the right of the stage and had a pretty great time with Stray, Annie, Carin, and Max.

At the set break we went back by our seats because it was too crowded on the sides.  It was such a different experience seeing Yonder from the back, but Ted does a damn fantastic job with the lights, it was really amazing to watch.

My highlights from this show were Half Moon Rising, This Lonesome Heart, Part One>On the Run, Country Boy Rock & Roll, Eli Renfro, Not Far Away, Rain Still Falls, Night is Left Behind, Let Me Fall, Jesus on the Mainline, Dawn's Early Light, Polly Put the Kettle On>In the Woods with the Munchies

The next day we got up and looked around outside a bit.  The weather was very cool and wet like the day before and it was beautiful.

The weather turned pretty crummy when we got in to Minnesota and we were obviously a little concerned about the weather affecting the show, after what happened last year.  We got to my mom's friend Linda's house early in the afternoon and we all went out for some diner food for lunch before heading to the zoo for the show.

Not only was it cool that my mom and Linda were going to see Yonder, they got to meet our wonderful Kinfolk friends.

This show was just spectacular.  The rain stopped but the air stayed nice and cool.  The song choices were great and they played their asses off.  Also, the first set was supposedly a continuation of the second set from the show that was rained out last year.  It was just a blast.  I mean, Freeborn Man> Wheel Hoss> Don't stop till you get enough> Freeborn Man... yeah, that was it right there.

My highlights from this show were Years With Rose, Crooked Hitch, Hold What You Got, Too Late Now, 20 Eyes, Paul & Silas, A Father's Arms, Roughneck Blues, Freeborn Man>Wheel Hoss> Don't Stop Till You Get Enough> Freeborn Man, Funtime, Spanish Harlem Incident, Girlfriend is Better

The next morning we hit the road home to Des Moines.  I just love that this run of shows ended at home.  Not only do we get a hometown show, but we are done driving before we're done seeing shows, which totally eliminates the sad drive home after tour.

The show in Des Moines was supposed to be at Simon Estes, but with all the recent rain the river flooded and the show had to be moved to People's Court.  It was a bummer we wouldn't be enjoying some bluegrass on the river, but we were so fortunate to have an alternate venue.

Hurry up and wait.

Junkyard finally got to meet my mom.

The hat switch:

It was Colin Peterson's last night working with Yonder... but maybe we'll see him again.  It was also his last night during the New Years run 2007.

This was truly an amazing show.  The band had gotten some bad news that day but they pulled through and put on a strong, high-energy show.  The sound at People's was phenomenal and since the capacity is smaller than at Simon Estes, it was a packed, sold-out show.  I'll have to listen to it again, but this show is easily in my top 5 Yonder shows... possibly the best.

My highlights from this show were Yes She Do, Oklahoma, Coming 'Round the Bend, High on a Hilltop, High Cross Junction, Snow on the Pines> Come Together> Snow on the Pines> Bolton Stretch, Jail Song, Suspicious Minds, Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, Town, Peace of Mind>Morning Dew> Peace of Mind, Everybody Knows, Just the Same, I'll Never Love Anybody But You, Going Up, My Gal, Little Maggie.  I mean holy cow, did that really just happen?

Set II: Jail Song, Suspicious Minds, Don't Let Your Deal Go Down, Town, You're No Good, Peace of Mind> Morning Dew> Peace of Mind, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Just the Same, I'll Never Love Anybody But You, Going Up, I am the Slime> After Midnight, My Gal
